Fashion photographer Frits Schroeder, who was born in Haarlem in 1945, hasbeen an acknowledged expert in his field for nearly 40 years. The amazing\u00a0number of clients he can boast \u2013 both in the Netherlands and much further\u00a0afield (such as the United States) \u2013 is proof of his expertise and the recognition\u00a0his skill has brought him. But Schroeder has other feathers to his cap!<\/p>\n
He began his career in photography where all famous photographers start\u00a0out: in the master\u2019s darkroom. In Schroeder\u2019s case, that master was\u00a0Theo Noort, who taught him the principles of photography and gave him the\u00a0opportunity to train in fashion and advertising photography. Schroeder set up\u00a0his own business in 1969, specialising in fashion photography.<\/p>\n
Although Frits Schroeder always strove to be original as a photographer, he\u00a0also looked with a keen photographer\u2019s eye at the stars of the era. \u201cIn the early\u00a0years I was mainly inspired by the British photographer David Bailey, Vogue\u2019s\u00a0permanent fashion photographer. American photographers such as Bruce\u00a0Weber\u00a0and Herb Rits also inspired me.\u201d As the French painter Gustave Courbet\u00a0put it, \u201cUnmistakable talent isn\u2019t afraid of being influenced.\u201d Schroeder\u00a0illustrated the truth of this wise saying in his own individual manner.<\/p>\n
Schroeder spent his youth in Zandvoort aan Zee. He says that his love of\u00a0nature\u00a0was already obvious from a very young age. His daily walks across beach and\u00a0dune turned the nature-lover into a keen observer. He has a large collection\u00a0of his own nature and landscape photos, and nature photography is another of
\nhis skills.<\/p>\n
The diversity of his clientele is illustrated by the famous names which appear\u00a0on his list of customers. There are major advertising firms, famous Dutch\u00a0department stores such as Bijenkorf, V&D, HEMA and De Bonnetterie,\u00a0virtually all the newspapers and a large number of magazines. The seemingly\u00a0endless list also includes industrial companies such as Henkes Senefelder,\u00a0which has published a calendar of Schroeder\u2019s work.<\/p>\n
In Frits Schroeder\u2019s photography career, which now spans almost forty years,\u00a0there is one further area where he excels: portrait photography. Not just the\u00a0creation of commissioned studio portraits \u2013 passers-by in the street also\u00a0attract his photographic interest. \u201cThey needn\u2019t be beauties as far as I\u2019m\u00a0concerned,\u201d Frits explains. \u201cAge-worn faces in black and white produce\u00a0attractive effects.\u201d This aspect of his talent is also demonstrated by the\u00a0collections of portraits that Frits keeps.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
